Province assists with creation of 30 new knowledge industry jobs

SAINT JOHN (CNB) - The Government of New Brunswick is helping Mariner expand its operation which will create 30 new jobs in Saint John, Moncton, and Fredericton. The Minister of Business New Brunswick Greg Byrne made the announcement today.

“Our government is proud to continue its partnership with this leading IT services provider as it continues to expand in Saint John and Moncton,” said Byrne. “Mariner is a proven leader in the ICT sector and by partnering with companies such as this, we are demonstrating our government's commitment to the knowledge industry, and to the diversification of New Brunswick's economy. Partnerships such as this one will help us move the province toward self-sufficiency by 2026."

Byrne was joined by Curtis Howe, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mariner, Minister of Supply and Services Ed Doherty and Saint John Mayor Ivan Court at the announcement in Saint John.

Government will provide an $8,000 forgivable loan for each of the 30 jobs created in New Brunswick. This funding will be used to help train employees and offset the equipment and capital costs associated with the creation of these new positions. Since it began operations, Mariner has grown from the initial five founders to a company of close to 100 professionals.

"We appreciate the province's help with Mariner’s ongoing expansion," Howe said. "This assistance is also vital to New Brunswick's economy by supporting the retention and creation of IT jobs. Mariner wants to expand its Saint John, Moncton, and Fredericton operations to better support customers globally."

“The clear commitment that Mariner has shown to the province of New Brunswick underscores our government's message that in New Brunswick companies can be more successful," Byrne added.

Government has developed a balanced approach to economic development with three priorities including investment attraction, retention and expansion of New Brunswick businesses and cluster development.

This investment in Mariner is part of government’s strategy to help existing companies expand and be more profitable in New Brunswick. Other recent announcements supporting government’s retention and expansion focus include 230 jobs at Cooke Aquaculture in St. George; 10 jobs at Maritime Cold Storage in Portage; 10 jobs at AL-PACK in Moncton; 30 jobs at the Bristol Group in Richibucto; and 50 jobs at the Floating Pipeline Co. in Saint John.

Mariner was founded in 2003 by five senior ICT professionals. They provide multi-faceted consulting and IT services to companies in New Brunswick and beyond. Mariner assists companies with strategic business analysis, project management, and other specialized IT skills.
